WHY seedlings get weak and leggy
Weak, leggy growth often starts long before you see it — and most gardeners don’t realize the early mistakes that cause it.
WHAT seedlings actually need to grow strong
The practical, science-backed basics that matter most — and why many popular seed-starting tips cause problems.
HOW to raise seedlings the right way
The High-Five Method, a simple, five-part approach I’ve refined over 40 years to help gardeners grow seedlings that are stout, resilient, and ready for real garden conditions.
Choose the right time to start seeds
so they’re ready to transplant without being root-bound or stressed
Select seed-starting soil that supports healthy roots
from day one (and avoid the ones that don’t)
Prevent damping-off disease
before it wipes out your seedlings
Give seedlings the right amount of light and moisture
for strong, compact growth
Encourage even, reliable germination
and avoid the common reasons seeds fail to sprout
Harden off plants the right way,
so they transition outdoors without suffering transplant shock
Begin with confidence,
even if you’ve never started seeds before

Before we dive in, let me share a bit about who I am — and why I care so deeply about helping gardeners grow strong, confident seedlings from the very start.
It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm a gardener, bumblebee fan, and your guide for this class.
I’ve been gardening organically for over 40 years in Kodiak, Alaska. Growing seedlings in a challenging climate taught me early on that when seedlings get a good start, everything else falls into place.
Along the way, I co-authored Chicken Soup for the Gardener’s Soul (a New York Times bestseller) and have shared weekly, practical gardening advice for nearly as long through workshops, a weekly newspaper column, and my YouTube channel, The UpBeet Gardener.
I know what it’s like to feel stuck and frustrated when seedlings don’t grow the way you hoped. My goal is simple: to give you clear, hands-in-the-dirt guidance you can use right away to raise healthy seedlings—and grow a productive, satisfying garden from there.
See you inside!

Thanks, Marion, for the info on starting seeds. It was really helpful --I turned on my fan right after the session and it’s still on!
— Robert H.
You have no idea how much you helped me. I have a nursery in Brazil, where we produce around 700,000 seedlings/year. In the last two years, we lost around 300,000 seedlings because of damping off. I've tried all you can imagine to solve the problem. Thanks to your suggestion about air circulation, I didn't lose one seedling from damping off. So, I just want to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH. God bless you!
